As a result of clay soil, a garden with a steep level change required high upkeep and had lost shape.Plan for a summer house in the redundant north-east corner also had to be taken in to account.
To combat the high water retention of the soil, we started by digging a grid of gravel-filled bore holes. Sleeper walls were used to resolve levels and provide planting space using earth from the centre of the garden.
The paved pathway incorporates a small lawn and makes a feature of the classically British silver birch tree in the sunny south east corner. With improved drainage a key consideration in the design process, the level of maintenace required should be reduced. The curved and angular edges of the different sections creates visual interest and plenty of room for planting.
